Noho Theatre Group’s Nô Where?: tonight we “play”
Tonight we hope you can enjoy three plays from our early years (1981-1982), and
a new dance collaboration. Founding members, and their sons perform in dances and
plays featuring Western texts interpreted by Japanese noh-kyogen techniques and spirit.
These display the resonance of Western ideas about the existential problems of life and
death with Buddhist resignation, through the common minimalist expressivity of traditional
arts and Beckett.
When we began the Noho Theatre Group 35 years ago, I was interested in surface
aspects of technique and style. How the kyogen actor moved, or the noh actor showed
sadness, how the drum clacks and flute interacted with the dancer―these were all
perceptible, shapeable aspects of performance. As director, I could try to control timing
and spacing, form and flow, to greatest affect. The plays performed tonight reflect those
early years of careful trial and error--doing away with excess, and clarifying for wide-
ranging international audiences.
But as we have rehearsed revivals of these “classic” plays from Noho’s repertoire―
and the new dance-play Northern Mirror―I have noticed something else. The actors are
very relaxed about their roles, polishing the old and sure-fire gems again. There is a spirit
of casual freedom in their masterful expressions, what Zeami referred to as elegant
playfulness, yûgaku遊曲. They have made the plays their own, and so the director
obsolete.
Noho seems to have reached a stage of creation and consolidation, our experiments
katafied. I hope that you are able to enjoy these set polished gems and decorative flowers,
which will hopefully transmit to the next generation.
